* Of Canadian Railway Importance _ A Rare "Last Spike" Diamond Brooch engraved 'Craigellachie B.C. 7. NOV. 1885'
The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was completed at Craigellachie, British Columbia, at 9:22 am on November 7, 1885. This brooch (of which three others are known about) contains a piece of the "second to last spike" (which bent when being driven in).
The brooch measuring 54.9mm long contains eight principal old cut stones measuring c. 7mm, 6.45, 6.1, 5.5, 5.2, 4.9, 4.4 & 4mm with five smaller old cuts to the head and four additional rose cuts (based on diameter alone in the region of 5.9ct) presented in a high carat gold and platinum setting, 8.3g

Provenance _ Charles John Shore, 3rd Baron Teignmouth. (1840-1915) and by decent. This is linked to the Royal Presentation Mirror (lot 170) in the sale and it is possilbe this brooch belonged to Prince Arthur Govenor General of Canada who crossed Canada via the recently completed Canadian Pacific railroad.
